How to Download Tax Year Overviews

for Mortgage Applications


Your Tax Year Overview from HMRC provides a summary of the tax you owe or have paid for a specific tax year. Mortgage lenders often request these documents to verify your income. Here's how to download your Tax Year Overviews:

Log in to your HMRC account

Step 1: Log in to Your HMRC Account

Start by logging into your online HMRC account via the Government Gateway. You’ll need your user ID and password. You can log in to your HMRC account by clicking here.

Step 2: Navigate to 'Self Assessment'

Once logged in, go to the “Self Assessment” section on your account dashboard. If you’re registered for Self Assessment, this option will be available.

Step 3: Click 'View Self Assessment return for tax year x - x'

In the Self Assessment section, click on "View Self Assessment return" for the relevant tax year. This will display your submitted tax returns and other options.

Step 4: View Your Tax Year Overview


Choose the relevant tax year from the dropdown menu and click 'Go'.

Step 5: Follow These Next Steps

  • Select 'Print your tax year overview'

  • From the printing options pop-up, choose your destination printer as 'Print to PDF' and choose your preferred file destination to save the document to.

  • Repeat for additional tax years.

Step 6: Keep a Copy for Your Records

It’s wise to keep a backup copy of your tax year overview in your records, especially if you’re using it to apply for a mortgage or loan.
