Name: Colin Brown
Job title: Financial Adviser
Tell us about yourself – I was actually born in Glasgow and moved to America when I was very young. However, I returned to England just in time for secondary school and have lived in Margate ever since. I’ve always said Margate is the tropic of Thanet, and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. I love my work and nothing compares to being a financial adviser and helping people shape their lives.
Describe your business and how it started – I’ve been in financial services now for just over 30 years. In 1995, I decided to leave the network I was previously tied with, and become a wholly independent and directly authorised IFA. Need Financial Planning itself came about in 2015. It’s the best business decision I’ve ever made and I’m more excited than ever for what the future holds. We offer advice in multiple areas, such as mortgages, insurance, pensions, investments, equity release, and estate planning.
How has your business changed over the last year? – We’ve gone from a small team of 4 to a slightly less small team of 5! We’ve seen fantastic growth as we continue to expand the areas of advice we offer, and also the geographical area of people we are seeing.
What is your business philosophy? – We want to bring a ray of sunshine into what is commonly viewed as a grey world. In a black and white industry such as ours, we want to be the ones that people come to for colour.
Describe your company’s special qualities – We always like to have fun and make sure customers enjoy their experience with us, but that doesn’t stop us from getting the work done thoroughly and efficiently.
What advice would you give someone starting out in a similar line of work? – Always have a big smile on and be ready to make long lasting relationships. This industry can help so many people and you need to be a friendly face that people can trust.
Where do you see yourself in five years? – Still working, that’s for sure! I love what I do and meeting new people, so as long as I still have all my marbles, I’ll keep going and going. As a business, our aim is to be the go to financial advice firm in the South East.
How do you relax – do you find time for hobbies and interests? – I’m a huge rugby fan, and I can often be found at Thanet Wanderers Rugby Union Football Club, where I have previously played and coached. Apart from that, I enjoy long dog walks, travelling, fine food and good ale. What did you have for breakfast this morning? – Porridge with bananas and honey, best way to start any day!
